Re: Vintage WW2 Destruction; Planes, Boats, Tanks, People
You saw the huge hole in the front of the tank. That was ONE shot, through the THICKEST armor the Sherman had. It obviously wiped out the entire crew. The metal that spalled (broke off the inside of the armor, like when you punch through a section of dry-wall) ricocheted around the inside of the tank until it settled into something soft that stopped it. That was either the seat padding, or the human bodies in the tank. Those bodies were FILLED with shrapnel. Death was instant. Imagine hitting a golf ball in a fully tiled bathroom, and multiply it by 1000, and you get an idea of the hornet's nest an American tank became when it was hit. ONE German Tiger crew reported knocking out as many as FORTY Sherman tanks in less than an hour. In contrast, there are pictures of Tiger tanks with their crews standing in front of the tank, showing as many as 38 Sherman shell hits, with NO penetration of the tank, and the crew was in perfect health. German troops fought hard, because they had complete faith that their tanks would protect them right to the bitter end. |
