These appear to be 'mercy killings'. When bodies are suspected to be booby trapped, they are not dealt with by pumping bullets into them at point blank range. Nor, I imagine, is it sensible to manhandle them before shooting. This is euthanasia. The only alternative option is first aid and battlefield surgery, followed by a medevac to the nearest ship, where teams of American surgeons and medical professionals may fight to save the Japanese soldiers, and probably in vain. Such a rescue effort would undoubtably cost lives elsewhere during the proceedings. So fuck them. It saved them the dishonor of capture, which they profess so loudly to detest. |

Actually it was Croatia that was the Nazi puppet state. They even set up their own death camp at Jasenovac, independently of the Nazis, to slaughter Serbs, Jews, Roma, and other enemies. The Serbs were (and are) the allies of the Russians. Both sides committed numerous atrocities. You are right, though, that not much has changed.
