Re: Syrian Tank, Direct Shot
I was a TOW gunner in the Marines. (Tube launched, Optically tracked Wire guided missile.) So I'm partial to the vid. The TOW has a probe on the end that smashes into the armor and instantly melts a perfect hole and the rest of the missile enters the tank and explodes. All crew die instantly ESPECIALLY if the tank is "buttoned up" meaning the hatches on the driver compartment and the commander turret are sealed for combat. This is ideal as the TOW will create an instant vacuum of firey hell and kill the crew and more likely to get those secondary explosions you see in this vid, ie the extra ammo and fuel. OORAH

Re: Syrian Tank, Direct Shot
The probe is not exactly a penetrator, it assures the shaped charge detonates at exactly the right distance of the tank's (reactive) armor, and makes it therefore more powerful. Without the probe it would detonate too close for the shaped charge to really shape into the jet penetrator it is supposed to be and will therefore do less damage. So the probe IMHO is more like a "bang switch" :) |
