The rounds current tanks, at least in the USA, are not explosive generally. They are just very aerodynamic, VERY heavy pieces of metal. Sometimes they are depleted uranium which is even heavier than lead. The impact from the round causes the metal it strikes to melt very quickly which also causes the inside of the tank to get very hot making the organics burn up and the weapons inside explode from the incredible heat and pressure. And its not Depleted Uranium or White Phosphorus....its a downward shaped charge that detonates on top of the tank where the armor is the weakest. All that fire is the tanks rounds cooking off. Its called a catastrophic kill.
Diablo thats not what a Sabot DU does. It punches a hole in the tank and fragments inside. The Du is very hot and yes catches things on fire quickly, but the kinetic energy of the hit causes a massive influx of pressure inside (Overpressure) that crushes everything and as the round passes through the tank sucks it out the big hole it creates. This over pressure causes the tanks ammo to explode which pops the turret 20 feet in the air.
