Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread IV
Technically, this costs nothing to the US. Military investments have 0 return, unless you are invaded and it helps to avoid negative return...so in a way you can then treat avoiding negative return( losing your country/infrastructure) as a positive return on investing in military. Other than that, money invested in buying military equipment is as good as thrown out the window( unless you can sell it off ). That's why USSR/North Korea or other heavily militarized nations were/are all close to bankruptcy. US giving away military equipment doesn't really cost them anything. A large part of it is lend-lease anyways. Most likely they will make a profit and modernize their weapons after giving away older stocks. Countries that don't have their own military production do have to pay out of pocket to re-equip themselves later on though. Just for reference, Russians have spent around $55 Billion on the war effort( not counting hundreds of billions over the coming decades due to permanently lost economical potential from dead people or those who left the country ) Also, for reference, Russian salaries tend to be around 400-500 dollars a month. This means that every single Russian has paid around 400 dollars towards the invasion effort so far( this includes everyone, from infants to the elderly ). And this seems to be the beginning of their expenses. Now is the time when they have ran out of their old stocks and need to start gearing their economy towards the war effort. This year is gona bite into the Russian wallets real hard unless the oil prices go up. |
