If you read the book "Tigers In The Mud" about Tiger tanks in Russia in WWII, the author was a Tiger commander, and it is an EXCELLENT book. He stood with the hatch open during tank fighting, as he felt it gave him a much better advantage than the Russians, who always shut everything up and only worked from inside their tank. That is what the author attributed his high kill ratio to. His war career ended when a Russian anti-tank round hit his turret hatch ring, ricocheted off, and removed his lower jaw very cleanly, in one instant. He said that he climbed out of the hatch, down the tank and was going to retrieve his jaw and teeth, which he could see laying on the ground. He said he must have been in shock, and was disregarding his huge wound. When he got down, he was confronted by a Russia soldier, and he had no weapon. But nearby German soldiers, who his tank had been protecting, saw what happened, shot the Soviet before the soldier could shoot him, and bundled him into a Kubelwagen and got him to an aid station, and he survived and had a fake lower jaw installed and plastic surgery. After the war ended, his younger brother got home at 9 am on a certain day, he himself got home at about noon, and later that afternoon, his father, who was a combat engineer, arrived about 5 pm. So his mother had her entire family home again in just one day. They were a lucky family, as no one in the family was killed during the war. He was a good author and told some amazing stories in his time in the Tiger forces.

If you read the book "The Arms Of Krupp" about the 300 year history of the Krupp family and arms factory, they started making stainless replacement jaws for soldiers in WWI, and continued the work in WWII. It was one of their specialties during the wars. I think the author I discussed had one of the Krupp jaws when they gave him a new one.
