The pilot ejected, but did not survive.

Those are IR Flares to distract any IR missile fired at the heliocopter. It burns quite a bit hotter than the engine, so that any AA or MANPAD IR guided missle will track on the flare as opposed to the heat signature of the engine. They are ejected to the sides to hopefully avoid any spall or fragements for the missle warhead exploding.

Not any. Stingers use a combined IR/UV seeker head. Simple flares don't work vs. UV seekers.

Other western heat seekers (Sidewinder X, IRIS-T) rather use thermal imagery than just going for the hottest heat source. Means the exact thermal image of the target is slaved to the seeker and its just going after the target, ignoring everything else. Flares don't work vs. these as well.

Write any "russian" and you'll be right.
