I wonder what are the stories behind these beatings. It's not the only such case.

I doubt it's only because he is a muslim.
It's probably something that he did or refused to do because of his religion. I.e he was supposed to be on a lookout, but decided to turn towards mecha and mumble to himself instead, thus putting everyone in danger. Or refused to eat field rations because he thought it's not kosher or some shit.
