Yes. And he wouldn't have had to die. If the Germans hadn't killed the British prisoners, nothing probably would have happened to him, except going into POW captivity.
Similar stuff happened after the Malmedy Massacre in December, 1944. When the U.S. troops found out about it, they took no German prisoners for a few days. Just shot them as soon as they surrendered.
My Dad, who fought from D-Day in 1944 to Feb 7 in 1945, when he was captured, had a lot of stories about things like this that happened. If the Germans had been smart, they would have backed off the "tough-guy" routine, seeing as the war was already lost for them. But there was always some asshole fanatic that did things, that resulted in the deaths of a lot of other people on both sides, just because of the circumstances.

Well the Germans wanted to revenge, they knew the war is lost by 1944 but i think they wanted to inflict casualties as many as they could. thats why they murdered all Jews in a certain camp days before arrival of US forces and that's why they deported and murdered most of Greece Jews in mid 1944

Also they wanted to surrender to the west not to soviet union, some battles were fought against the soviets for the sole reason to push them back so germany could be surrendered to US and the UK

Those rounds make a pretty big exit wound (.30-06 or 7.62 x 63mm), all center of mass too so he probably bled out the back mostly, the military padre that inspected him post execution could have had the blood cleaned off before transport to his burial plot, no need for a bloody jeep/truck.

As for the lack of recoil, M1 Garands were pretty light on front lift recoil because they were front heavy, an attached bayonet would have been a cunt to maneuver but would sure as shit go straight through you.
