UPDATE:

Israel is freeing about 1,900 to 2,000 Palestinians as part of the swap that accompanied the ceasefire and the release of the last 20 living Israeli hostages. Of these, about 250 are long-term prisoners serving life sentences for deadly attacks. The rest are people detained during the war and not charged. Israeli officials say about 1,700 fall into that latter category. Reports also note forced exile for part of the group, with about 154 of those freed being deported to third countries.

As of late 2024 and into 2025, data from HaMoked shows Israel holds 1,461 sentenced prisoners, 3,378 remand detainees, and 3,544 administrative detainees held without trial.

Minors and women are part of the prison population as well; in December 2024, IPS was holding 113 minors on security grounds. Earlier swaps focused on women and minors.

The bottom line is that the current release is mixed. Some are convicted of lethal attacks, while many others were never charged and were held under administrative detention or short-term war detentions.
