The car bombs are armored with 1 inch thick metal. It takes a precision hit to the right area in order to stop the car. Often times the driver has a "dead switch" so killing the driver when the car is too close can be deadly. The word car is a misnomer. They are trucks, sometimes dumptrucks.

Seeing the force and range of those shockwaves really makes you appreciate the power of those bombs. The flames and smoke are just incidental to the energy release; it's the sudden violent displacement that does most of the work.
