I seriously doubt true "consciousness"; much more likely simple reflex action. If you have ever choked someone unconscious, it only takes a couple seconds of blood flow loss. When they cut someones head off, they start from the front side so the Carotid arteries and Jugular veins are cut long before the spine (final separation). Something instant, like a guillotine, maybe, but hand held edged weapon, highly unlikely...

I`ve often wondered how much time they are still alive during a beheading, but it is freaky to see their eyes open. It is not a way I want to die. But it is quick. I find it appalling that people can do that to another person they don`t even know.
