Re: ISIS Destroy M1A1 Abrams Tank Iraq
So my understanding is that the Abrams was designed to take hits like this, and it appeared to function just as it was designed. An Abrams is not impervoius to enemy fire obviously, a big enough IED would blow one sky high, but this TOW hit was not likely a fatal blow for the crew. The tank is disabled for sure, but the crew likely survived. The ammo storage was ignited, it is stored in compartments that blow outward and upward, this is why you see the flames as they are. Now in many Russian tanks the ammo is stored inside the turret with the crew, when it cooks off it does kill everyone and it is a horrible way to die. The Abrams crew is protected by a blast door that separates the crew from the ammo. From wiki "The tank has a halon firefighting system to automatically extinguish fires in the crew compartment. The engine compartment has a firefighting system that is engaged by pulling a T-handle located on the left side of the tank. The Halogen gas can be dangerous to the crew.[68] However, the toxicity of Halon 1301 gas at 7% concentration is much less than the combustion products produced by fire in the crew compartment, and CO2 dump would be lethal to the crew. The crew compartment also contains small hand-held fire extinguishers. Fuel and ammunition are stored in armored compartments with blowout panels to protect the crew from the risk of the tank's own ammunition cooking off if the tank is damaged — the main gun's ammunition is stored in the rear section of the turret, with blast doors that open under power by sliding sideways only to remove a round for firing, then automatically close." |

Re: ISIS Destroy M1A1 Abrams Tank Iraq
Thats a Propellant fire as it hit the storage bins. Why are people going on about reactive armour ? The Abrams only had it as part of the TUSK (Tank urban survival kit) install and that wwas only level with the suspension

Re: ISIS Destroy M1A1 Abrams Tank Iraq
Hello all, long time lurker here but never posted before. I feel the need to post based on the assumptions and facts other posters have made regarding this video. First, no M1 variant currently has reactive armor in the location that this one was hit. Second, this is clearly an ammunition cook off from the hit to the rear of the turret where the ammunition is stored. Third, IF there was a crew on board AND they had the ammo door closed, they most likely would have survived the hit and subsequent fire afterword. As others have stated, the M1 is designed with blowout panels to vent the ammunition cook off to the outside of the turret in the hopes of sparing the crew. Let's just say my experience with M1s and they're strengths and weaknesses is something I'm very familiar with. |
