The targeting mechanism of the TOW missile is universally described in the acronym "TOW" - tube launched, optically tracked, wire-guided. All this means is that after the missile is launched out of the tube, the operator must keep the target center on his crosshairs as he looks through the sights for the entire duration all the way to the point of impact. This form of guidance, also known as SACLOS, or semi-automatic command-to-line of sight, involves the gunner indirectly guiding, or commanding, the missile into the target as the TOW system translates them into electrical signals sent through a wire several km long that spools from the backside of missile from the tube itself.
