York Salvage Yard Oil Spill Cleanup in Codorus Tributary
York Salvage Yard Fire Unified Command responders were working March 3 to remove oil and waste from an unnamed tributary that leads to Codorus Creek. The cleanup is in response to a Feb. 25 building fire and associated oil spill at J&K Salvage in York, Pa. Responders used underflow dams, boom and skimming techniques, with safety air monitoring for workers. Underflow dams let cleaner water at the bottom pass through a pipe while trapping floating contaminants behind the dam for recovery. The Unified Command includes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, York County Hazardous Materials Team, York Area Fire/York Regional Emergency Management, and Spring Garden Township.
