A 26-year-old Filipino mariner was medically evacuated from the 850-foot Liberian-flagged container ship Carmell 1 on March 2, 2024, after severe abdominal issues. The ship was initially about 400 nautical miles northwest of Guam and was en route to Vietnam.

The U.S. Coast Guard Joint Rescue Sub-Center in Guam was alerted on the afternoon of March 1. A Coast Guard duty flight surgeon in Alameda recommended a medical evacuation, with concurrence from an HSC-25 flight surgeon in Guam.

An MH-60S Knighthawk crew from U.S. Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 reached the ship on the morning of March 2 and hoisted the mariner about 100 nautical miles offshore in 17 mph winds and 10-foot seas.

The mariner was handed over to Guam Fire Rescue at Naval Hospital Guam, then taken to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable condition.

The case followed a Feb. 9 medevac of a 37-year-old Filipino mariner from the 1,202-foot German-flagged container ship Antwerpen Express after symptoms indicative of a stroke.
