Mayday Call From Sunshine Bridge Collapse in Florida
The Sunshine Skyway bridge collapsed on May 9, 1980, when the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support column during a sudden squall, sending over 1,200 feet of the bridge plummeting into Tampa Bay. The collision caused six cars, a truck, and a Greyhound bus to fall 150 feet into the water, killing 35 people. This mayday call to the Coast Guard was recorded as it happened.

Re: Mayday Call From Sunshine Bridge Collapse in Florida
I was living down there when this happened I guess I was probably eight years old living in Tampa. that was scary bridge to go across specially the old Bridge because there was only two lanes going in both directions now I think there's three or four lanes on each span on the new Sunshine Bridge. It is beautiful but it's even higher than the old one. A lot of people commit suicide off of it is probably the second most popular bridge to jump off of if you're going to kill yourself besides the Golden Gate Bridge.

Re: Mayday Call From Sunshine Bridge Collapse in Florida
I used to go over that monstrosity EVERY weekend to visit my grandfather who was a long term patient in the VA hospital (Bay Pines). I was a little kid and the sound of it was horrific..... scared the living shit out of me. I remember being terrified of bridges for years after the collapse, even small ones. The first time I ever drove solo over the new one, I was in a Mitsubishi Eclipse.......pure fucking terror.

Only one person survived the fall: Wesley MacIntire, 56. The Gulfport man’s blue Ford Courier pickup truck fell onto the ship before it entered the water, allowing him to escape his vehicle and swim to the surface. Fucking legend |

What a fuck up by the captain of that ship, should have waited for the squall to pass before attempting to go though it as his ship carrying no cargo would have been in effect a great big broadside sail to the winds & tossed around like a cork. Fucken Dickhead IMO ! |
