17-year-old Kayaker Rescued After 12 Hours Off Honolulu
A 17-year-old kayaker was rescued off Honolulu on Oct. 17 after being missing at sea for nearly 12 hours. The teenager had become separated from a paddling group about half a mile offshore of Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort and had been missing since about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16. An HC-130 Hercules crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point directed good Samaritans to the teenager's location offshore the War Memorial Natatorium, where the teenager was clinging to a kayak. An off-duty Honolulu Ocean Safety Department lifeguard who had joined the overnight search rescued the teenager and brought the teenager safely to shore. The search and rescue involved the Coast Guard, Honolulu Fire Department, Honolulu Ocean Safety Department, Honolulu Airport Fire Rescue, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, and good Samaritans.
