Re: The Wesfarmers Curragh Coal Mine Crane Accident
I went to the Bucyrus Museum in Milwaukee (Highly recommended!) They built drag line shovels like this, including "Big Muskie" in Ohio, which has since been scrapped. Among their displays are segments of dragline cable. Some of them are 5" in diameter. They wear quickly, and have to be changed out every couple of months. Just the cables themselves can weigh 10-30 tons total. I remember the "Big Muskie" from "My Weekly Reader" that our teacher handed out, when I was in 2nd grade. It told all about this gigantic drag line shovel, and I was fascinated. I didn't hear they cut it up until I went ot the Bucyrus Museum. They have the main pully wheel from the top of the boom on display. It's probably 8 feet in diameter. A mile away, there is a tribute bronze statue to "The Crusher" a famed wrestler from South Milwaukee, who I used to watch on the local VHF channels in black and white. It's at the train station there. Just mindless and unimportant information that occurred to me. |
