Mitholz Depot Explosion Devastated Swiss Village in 1947

On December 20, 1947, a series of explosions tore through a Swiss Army ammunition depot above Mitholz, in the municipality of Kandergrund, Switzerland.

About 3,000 tonnes of ammunition exploded. Nine people were killed and seven were injured. Large parts of Mitholz were devastated, with several homes and the Blausee-Mitholz station on the Lötschberg railway destroyed.

About 3,500 tonnes of ammunition remain buried beneath the rubble, posing a continuing risk of further explosions.
