I could understand them losing their shit if they found dead bodies littered through their house or their pet torn to shreds or something, but for fuck's sake, it's just stuff. You can replace and rebuild stuff.

True aside from sentimental stuff. Some things like pictures and stuffed animals (for which kids grow up with) and Whatever can't be replaced. These things should be kept in the strongest part of the house. At least put copies of pictures and a few of these sentimental items in the strongest part of the house so at least you have something if shtf. Some people have storm shelters installed in their homes (bolted to the foundation or in the ground) and this would be a perfect place
