Little Joe II Breakup Tests Apollo Escape System, May 19, 1965
On May 19, 1965, a Little Joe II booster testing the Apollo launch escape system began rolling uncontrollably and broke up at about 12,000 feet. The failure unexpectedly triggered a real abort scenario. The launch escape system used three cable loops running alongside the rocket and was designed to fire when at least two loops broke.
