Hydrogen Observation Balloon Burns in First World War
A hydrogen-filled observation balloon went down in flames during the First World War. Observation-balloon crews were among the first combat users of parachutes. Early systems used a parachute packed in a bag suspended from the balloon, with the crew member wearing a waist harness attached to it.
