C-130A Tanker Breaks Up Over Northern California Wildfire

On June 17, 2002, Hawkins & Powers Aviation C-130A N130HP crashed while fighting a wildfire near Walker, California.

During a pull-out after a retardant drop, the center wing box failed and the starboard wing separated. The port wing came off less than a second later. The aircraft rolled inverted and crashed into the forest, killing all three crew members.

The loss, along with a PB4Y-2 tanker crash near Estes Park, Colorado, on July 18, 2002, led the U.S. Department of the Interior to cancel its contracts for all heavy tankers.
