Hakkinen Tyre Failure at Hockenheimring in 1999
On August 1, 1999, Mika Hakkinen suffered a tyre failure at more than 200 mph at the Hockenheimring in Germany. The car went into the tyre barriers rather than the hard guardrails. The crash was cited as a factor in the end of Hockenheim's old layout. A new section was later built to bypass the extremely fast forest section, reducing speeds compared with the previous circuit.
