Explosion Rocks South Fremont, Destroys Horizon BioFuels Facility
Emergency crews are on the scene of an enormous explosion in south Fremont. Photos and video from the scene show extreme damage to the former Golden Sun Feeds facility. The explosion knocked down the top section of the tallest part of the structure, which stood hundreds of feet high. The plant is currently owned by Horizon BioFuels. The company’s social media page says it produces bedding, heating pellets and smoking pellets. The Nebraska Manufacturing Extension Partnership website lists Horizon with 10 employees. Authorities say a large radius around the emergency site is shut down. People are discouraged from going to the scene. Details on the cause of the blast and any possible injuries aren’t immediately available.  |

The news this morning said it was a wood dust explosion, and there were two little girls waiting at the door for their father to get off work and take them to the doctor for a checkup. Apparently, they all died. This used to happen a LOT across the prairie, at grain elevators, and in places that made flour. In fact, there is a monument of an exploded flour mill in Minneapolis, Mn in memory of a HUGE explosion there that killed a bunch of people. I think there also was a flour mill explosion in Wisconsin a couple years ago. One of the plans for a "James Bond" explosion from a book I read, is putting a firecracker in a paper bag with flour in it, then setting it off. Anything finely powdered can act like an explosive. Flour, coal dust, etc. When I drive cross country, there are still remote places that have a grain elevator that was blown up, and 1/4 mile away, is the new grain elevator they built after the accident.  |

Reminds me of when I was a kid, we made dust bombs with a coffee can, a candle, a pinch of flour and a tire pump. Inspired by the power of grain silo explosions. Good times.  |

You can clearly see some built up gasses exiting the top before she goes up, so a pressure issue could be a reason for it to go boom.
