Smitty’s Supply Oil and Lubricants Facility in Louisiana on Fire and Explosion
near Roseland. The plant holds a bulk storage capacity of 33 million liters petroleum. An explosion and fire at Smitty’s Supply, an automotive supply facility in Tangipahoa Parish, on Friday prompted a mandatory evacuation and raised environmental concerns as residents reported oily residue mixed with rain falling over their cars and homes. Tangipahoa Parish officials ordered evacuation within a one-mile radius of the intersection of Highways 51 and 10 in Roseland after the explosion at Smitty’s Supply, a company that distributes lubricants and auto fluids. There are over 400 employees at Smitty’s Supply. Authorities urged residents to relocate immediately and stay clear of the area until further notice. Highway 51 at Highway 10 remains closed. No injuries have been reported. In addition, residents in neighboring communities such as Amite, located approximately three miles south, reported finding a black oily substance mixed with soot in Friday’s rain. The oily residue was seen settling on cars, rooftops and outdoor furniture, raising environmental and health safety concerns of residents. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. |
