Eschede High-speed Train Derailment Killed 101 in 1998
On June 3, 1998, a high-speed train derailed near Eschede in Lower Saxony, Germany, and crashed into a road bridge. The disaster killed 101 people and injured about 100. A fatigue crack in a wheel caused the wheel to fail. Part of the failed wheel became lodged in the train's floor and interfered with a set of points, derailing the rear cars while the front of the train continued. The driver continued for about 2 kilometers before being informed of the derailment by radio. The Eschede derailment remains Germany's worst rail disaster and the deadliest high-speed rail disaster worldwide.  ·

The train was carrying 287 passengers when it derailed at about 200 km/h.
