Bomb Explosion Aboard USS Oriskany, 1953

On March 6, 1953, a 250-pound general-purpose bomb dislodged from a landing F4U Corsair on USS Oriskany and fell onto elevator number three before exploding.

Two sailors were killed and 13 were wounded. Shrapnel tore through the hangar deck below, damaging parked aircraft, while spilled gasoline flooded the hangar bay. Firefighting teams extinguished and contained the fire before it spread further through the carrier.

The unconscious pilot was pulled from the burning aircraft, and damage-control crews returned the carrier to service within hours.
