Balloonfest 1986 Disrupted Cleveland and Rescue Efforts
In 1986, United Way released nearly 1.5 million balloons in downtown Cleveland as a fundraising publicity stunt. The balloons caused traffic problems, shut down a nearby airport runway, and interfered with the rescue effort for two missing fishermen. The fishermen were later found dead by drowning.
