CCTV shows the blast sending a fireball and debris flying sideways from the ferry as it was moored to the dock in the holiday spot in Mexico popular with British tourists.

A fireball ripped through a packed ferry docked in the popular Mexican resort of Playa del Carmen leaving 25 injured.

At least five of those wounded in the massive blast at the Spring Break hotspot are tourists and the 20 others are Mexicans, officials confirmed.

Three Canadians and two Americans were among the injured, local Civil Defence director Juan Medina Sosa confirmed tonight.

Dramatic footage shows the blast sending a fireball and debris flying sideways from the ferry as it was moored to the dock with people nearby.

The video, posted online by the newspaper Quintana Roo Hoy, also shows a cloud of smoke billowing from the wreckage.

The Barcos Caribe vessel was left with a gaping hole in its starboard side next to a passenger seating area.

The municipal statement said the explosion happened when passengers were getting off the boat.

According to a preliminary report, it is thought there may have been a build up of gas aboard the boat.

Eye-witnesses report seeing and hearing a "strong blast" from inside the vessel.
