2020 Beirut Port Ammonium Nitrate Explosion

On August 4, 2020, ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut, Lebanon, exploded after a fire broke out in the same warehouse.

At least 218 people were killed and 7,000 injured. Property damage was estimated at US$15 billion, and about 300,000 people were left homeless.

A cargo of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate had been stored without proper safety measures for six years after Lebanese authorities confiscated it from the abandoned MV Rhosus. As of September 2021, the exact cause of the detonation remained under investigation.
