A 2018 engineering report found "major structural damage" to the concrete slab beneath the pool deck at Champlain Towers South, a 13-story condominium complex near Miami, Florida. The report also described abundant cracking and crumbling in columns, beams and walls in the parking garage.

The findings shaped plans for a multimillion-dollar repair project, but work had not begun more than two and a half years after the warning. The building collapsed in the middle of the night on Thursday, trapping sleeping residents in the debris.
