Jeffrey Epstein: Legal History, Case Files & Photos
Jeffrey Epstein, a financier who served 13 months in jail under a 2008 plea deal in Florida, faced federal sex trafficking charges in New York in July 2019. His legal history began with a Palm Beach investigation in 2005 and continued after his death through the prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell and the release of case records. Palm Beach police began investigating Epstein in March 2005 after the family of a 14-year-old girl reported that she had been molested at his mansion. Other underage girls told investigators that Epstein had hired them to give sexual massages. Federal prosecutors prepared an indictment in 2007, but Epstein's lawyers negotiated a non-prosecution agreement with Alexander Acosta, the U.S. attorney in Miami. In June 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution and soliciting prostitution from someone under 18. He served 13 months in jail. The agreement shielded him and potential co-conspirators from federal prosecution by Acosta's office. New York federal prosecutors later concluded that the agreement did not bind them. Epstein was arrested at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on July 6, 2019, after returning from Paris, and was held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. He pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and sex trafficking conspiracy. Acosta resigned as labor secretary days after the arrest amid public outrage over the earlier deal. Judge Richard Berman denied Epstein bail on July 18, finding him a danger to the community and a flight risk. On July 23, 2019, Epstein was found on his cell floor with a strip of bedsheet around his neck. He survived and was placed on suicide watch and psychiatric observation. His cellmate was transferred out on Aug. 9, and no replacement was brought in. Epstein was found hanged in his cell on Aug. 10, 2019, at age 66, before trial. New York City's medical examiner ruled the death suicide by hanging after an Aug. 11 autopsy. Epstein's lawyers challenged the finding and hired pathologist Michael Baden. The FBI investigated and found no criminality. In June 2023, the Justice Department's inspector general found no evidence contradicting that finding and concluded that jail staff negligence and misconduct contributed to the death. Correctional officer Tova Noel and material handler Michael Thomas failed to complete more than 75 mandatory checks. Both were charged with conspiracy and falsifying records to certify that checks had been made. The charges were later dropped under deferred prosecution agreements requiring 100 hours of community service and cooperation with the inspector general's review. Berman dismissed Epstein's criminal case on Aug. 29, 2019. In December 2021, a federal jury convicted Ghislaine Maxwell of five counts, including sex trafficking of minors, for recruiting and grooming teenagers for Epstein. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Her convictions were upheld on appeal. The Epstein Files Transparency Act became law on Nov. 19, 2025. The Justice Department subsequently released more than 3 million pages, while the House Oversight Committee released estate records and photographs. This thread collects about 100 photographs, more than 200 documents running to some 14,000 pages, nine audio recordings released by the Justice Department and four videos, posted across several replies. The documents include court filings and trial transcripts, FBI Vault files, and estate emails and letters. Photographs related to Epstein's death at the jail are graphic and are not in this thread. They are in a separate thread: Jeffrey Epstein Death Pictures From Apparent Suicide.
