Jane Doe 1988 From Mount Vernon, New York
On February 14, 1988, a young woman’s naked body was found. She’d only been dead for about 6 hours, and her face was very recognizable, but still she was never identified.
The woman had been murdered. Her killer bound her hands and ankles, asphyxiated her, and inflicted blunt force trauma. The body had been left in the street at 10 Carleton Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York. Mount Vernon is only about 10 miles north of Manhattan. The area where the victim was found is an industrial area, not residential. She was laid on the ground with her arms out to the side and her ankles crossed. This Jane Doe was white, and between 18 and 30 years old. She was 5’3″ tall, and she only weighed 105 pounds. The victim had fake press-on nails that she’d painted reddish pink — a detail I doubt anyone would remember after all these years. Her face had some moles and freckles, and on the right side of her neck, just above her shoulder, she had a big, noticeable birthmark. Her eyebrows were in need of plucking. Indeed, she even had stray hairs on the bridge of her nose. Her armpits were unshaven. Those details make me think she wasn’t interested in getting herself a boyfriend. I remember the 80′s well enough to know armpits and legs were expected to be hair-free — especially when a girl was dating. The confusing part is for me that the victim had recently shaved or waxed her pubic hair. I learned that Brazilian waxing arrived in New York in 1986, so this was a very recent trend. Now why would Jane Doe not shave her armpits and not pluck her eyebrows but remove all her pubic hair? It is possible she shaved her pubic area for hygienic purposes rather than erotic ones. She might have had a case of pubic lice at one time, or wanted to avoid one. It is also possible that her killer shaved the victim himself. There is no reason to think the poor woman wasn’t held for a period of time before she was killed. She’d been bound so she’d obviously been incarcerated by her murderer.

Re: Jane Doe 1988 From Mount Vernon, New York
I would guess that she had run away from home a few years before and was surviving on the street. She might never have been reported as missing. She earned money the way most runaways do and eventually got picked up by the wrong guy.

Re: Jane Doe 1988 From Mount Vernon, New York
I personally don't think there is enough info here to guess that. There is a lot of speculation about her body hair. Any of the guesses there are possibilities at this point, since we have no idea what happened. It's sad that her identity is still a mystery. But we don't know for certain that she wasn't reported missing. I have read of several missing persons/unidentified body cases where the person was eventually identified and had been reported missing. But if they go missing in one state and their body is found in another, even today it can be difficult to match that up. There isn't a good enough system in place for that currently. |

The body hair is easy. She got crabs, went to a free clinic, they shaved that area, treated the lice. Living on the street, she couldn't shave the other areas often. She was most likely killed shortly after a trip to a free clinic.

Re: Jane Doe 1988 From Mount Vernon, New York
I thought Cathleen Martin was this Jane Doe at one point and actually still have my doubts that she isn't. The DNA sample used to rule out Cathleen may have been tainted, and Cathleen's husband and parents all believe that this IS their missing daughter after viewing the post mortem pictures. Evidently, the test results for the sample they submitted showed a strong family resemblance but was not 100% certain, which in my opinion is more than enough reason to retake the test, but the police seem to disagree. Personally, I would use a different testing facility for a new test if it ever happens. As far as I know, the only thing holding up the testing of a new sample is money. Strange. If it was my kid or family member I don't care how broke I am, I'd find a way to cover the costs. ![]() http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/1013dfnj.html https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/10795 |
