Re: New Orleans. Victims of Hurricane Katrina- NEW ADDED
I have to just pipe in here and say though that my husband and I just took a vacation to N.O. this summer and it was as wonderful as the two other times we'd been there before Katrina. The only big difference I noticed was that there weren't the large numbers of fortune tellers, art vendors, etc. in Jackson Square. That was kind of sad because that used to be a very lively place in the evenings. But as far as feeling safe, I felt totally safe. N.O. is like any other city, there are bad areas and good areas and there are bad areas IN the good areas. You just have to be mindful of that and educate yourself and watch where you go. Most of the problems in N.O. now are outside the French Quarter and the FQ is where most out of towners go anyway. There was an article recently kind of panning N.O. for the crime rate and putting down the FQ and tourists (I was like, "really??? That's where you get most of your money from! Nothing like biting the hand that feeds you!") but really, no matter what anyone says, the FQ is the HEART of N.O., it was there before anything else that's in N.O. that still exists, and to me it will always be N.O. The rest is just a city that was built up around it. There's something for everyone in the FQ, even if you're not into the bar/Bourbon St. scene. I dearly love N.O. and I'd move there except for two things: 1. Not rich enough to live in the good parts of the FQ and 2. It is prone to hurricanes and I couldn't afford to have to be evacuating/losing things so often, especially if I ran a business which is what I'd be doing if I lived in the FQ of N.O. And yes, I agree, the response to Katrina was a major embarassment for the U.S. especially considering they had notice that it was coming in time to plan...but there is some responsibility for some things that can be put on some residents as well. You also have to consider that N.O. is pretty unique geographically in the U.S. and thus there were some considerations as far as dealing with the crisis that weren't considered. |

New Orleans is the cesspool of Louisiana... We had to deal with the "evacuees" for six months. What a horrible group of people... Everyone was glad when they finally left.

Re: New Orleans. Victims of Hurricane Katrina- NEW ADDED
boogerbear...you have to think about the make up of the "evacuees." Not everyone in N.O. is like them, in fact, most people I've met from N.O. and when I've been in N.O. were great people. The people that needed to be relocated were your dirt poor, uneducated morons that either weren't smart enough to get out on their own before the storm hit and were too poor to (due to being uneducated and the cycle of poverty) and had no where to go. Those are almost always going to be your "trashy" people that cause problems and you'd find them in any group of evacuees from any big city in the U.S. The other people that evacuated from N.O. had the smarts and the money to get out before the storm and had family and resources to settle elsewhere before moving back so they weren't a bother to anyone. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances I just related, the people of N.O. as a whole got a bad rap because of the behaviors of the evacuees that had no resources which is what most people saw.

First off, I see you're flying the state flag. Second, Fuck you. I was IN the fucking storm. You want to talk about evacuees, I only wish I could be lumped into that category. I'm a SURVIVOR. I went through the fucking storm. I was there, I was in the whole mix. You have no idea what we went through. You're bitching that evacuees were a pain in the ass. Well, boy, You have no fucking idea.

Re: New Orleans. Victims of Hurricane Katrina- NEW ADDED
Right after Katrina, I happened upon the most sickening horrible pix of THOUSANDS of victims on "orgrish dot com", page after page of victims, all close ups, too, probably for identification purposes....I felt kinda sick for months every time I heard the word Katrina mentioned---those gross burned images in my mind would pop up. No one could ever imagine the sheer amount of corpses in various states of decomosition floating and laying everywhere for weeks. And I couldn't NOT look, either, no matter how much I cringed to see the photos! It was probably the grossest thing I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen some gross shit!!!
