Mount St. Helens Before and After the 1980 Eruption
Mount St. Helens changed dramatically during its 1980 eruption, when a massive landslide triggered the volcanic event. The slide removed part of the mountain, and areas that existed on its slopes before the eruption were gone afterward. Spirit Lake, beneath the volcano, was within the evacuation area, but at least one resident who refused to leave was killed. Plant life in the surrounding area had still not fully recovered.  ·
