Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Off Sanriku Triggers Tsunami Warning

On April 20, 2026, a strong offshore earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan at about 4:53 p.m. local time.

The Japan Meteorological Agency initially estimated it at magnitude 7.4, then revised it to around 7.7 after further analysis. The epicenter was off the Sanriku coast near Iwate Prefecture.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning and led to widespread alerts and precautionary measures across several coastal regions.
