Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Shakes West Java

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit Indonesia's main island of Java on Saturday, December 3, shaking the same town devastated by a tremor last month that left tens of thousands homeless.

The quake was initially reported at magnitude 6.4 and later downgraded to 5.7. BMKG said there was no tsunami potential.

It struck on land at a depth of 112 km, with the epicenter 18 km southeast of Banjar in West Java.

Some residents in other West Java towns and cities said they felt the quake strongly. Some people ran outside during the shaking, then returned to their activities after it calmed down.

Local authorities said no aftershocks had been recorded so far, but warned people to stay alert.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Banjar, 28 km from the epicenter, Paseh, 33 km away, and Bandung, 49 km away.
