A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked wide swaths of Turkey and neighboring Syria on Monday, killing more than 20,000 people and injuring thousands more as it toppled thousands of buildings and trapped residents under mounds of rubble.

Authorities feared the death toll would keep climbing as rescuers searched through tangles of metal and concrete for survivors in a region beset by Syria’s 12-year civil war and a refugee crisis.

Residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside in the rain and snow to escape falling debris, while those who were trapped cried for help. Throughout the day, major aftershocks rattled the region, including a jolt nearly as strong as the initial quake. After night fell, workers were still sawing away slabs and pulling out bodies as desperate families waited for news on trapped loved ones.

Tens of thousands who were left homeless in Turkey and Syria faced a night in the cold. In Turkey’s Gaziantep, a provincial capital about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from the epicenter, people took refuge in shopping malls, stadiums and community centers. Mosques around the region were opened to provide shelter. More than 6,400 people were rescued across 10 provinces.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared seven days of national mourning.

The quake, which was centered on Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, sent residents of Damascus and Beirut rushing into the street and was felt as far away as Cairo.
Last one is an earthquake from 2020. Happened in Izmir.

Re: At Least 20,000 Dead As 7.8 Earthquake Strikes Turkey and Syria

20 February 2023
Another fairly large earthquake occurred about 3 hours ago (approx 1pm ET)

1. "A new earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 occurred a few minutes ago on the border of Turkey and Syria.

Turkish media reports devastation after new tremors in Hatay province.

The death toll from earthquakes in Turkey has risen to 41,156 — the government.

In the footage, mobile units of the Turkish security forces patrol the destroyed areas of Hatay, and at the end, the extent of today's destruction."

2. "Footage from the airport in Hatay during today's earthquake. The moment of the start of tremors was broadcast live"

Same video different source:
"In Türkiye, most provinces today announced [/B]the completion of rescue operations after the February 6 earthquake. Work continues only in the two most affected regions, where dozens of buildings remain to be checked.

According to recent reports, the death toll in Türkiye and Syria has exceeded 45,000.

However, the Turkish Ministry of Emergency Situations reported a new earthquake in Hatay province. Its magnitude is 6.4. The consequences are still unknown."

EDIT: added a third video from this quake

Another 5.6 magnitude earthquake today: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle...sc-2023-02-27/

New Turkey quake kills one person, flattens more buildings
February 27, 20239:35 AM EST

OSMANIYE, Turkey, Feb 27 (Reuters) - An earthquake shook southeast Turkey on Monday, killing one person, injuring 110 and causing 29 buildings to collapse, Turkish authorities said, triggering frantic work to rescue several people believed trapped in rubble.

The latest aftershock, with a magnitude of 5.6 and depth of 6.15 km, hit three weeks after a massive quake that killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

A rescue team carried out one man alive, strapped to a stretcher, from the rubble of a building in the province of Malatya, live footage on broadcaster CNN Turk showed.

A while later, it showed a woman, said to be the man's daughter, rescued from the same apartment block. They were said to have entered the damaged building to retrieve possessions left there after the first quake three weeks ago.

At one building, where three people were believed to be trapped, a team intermittently called for silence while they listened for sounds of life within.

Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) told a news conference that search and rescue teams had been deployed to five buildings.

There have been four fresh earthquakes in the region in the past three weeks, as well as 45 aftershocks with magnitudes between five and six, said AFAD's general director of earthquake and risk reduction Orhan Tatar.

"This is very extraordinary activity," Tatar said.
