Apart from the loss of life, the worst part about the flooding is that none of the water makes it into catchment areas and the drought continues. I'm glad that we've had cooler than normal weather in the past few days because it gives the firefighters time to get the big fires under controll and lets them do the backburning that is required to keep the city safe. I can't believe that certain regional counsels have banned back burning stating that it is bad for the environment. These are the same regions that get hit by large aggressive fires.

I suppose it doesn't help much that vast swathes of the interior are not easily inhabitable and everyone is sort of concentrated near the coasts :/
