On April 25, 2024, a sudden hailstorm struck Changshun County, Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. Video shows the sky getting darker momentarily as students dash to safety protecting their heads with hands from falling hailstones the size of golf balls.

According to local reports, from 7 a.m. on April 25 to 7 a.m. on April 26, hail fell in 20 counties in Guizhou Province including Changshun, with the largest diameter reaching 40 millimeters in Xixiu District, Anshun.

As a former skydiver, my thoughts are: At what altitude did those giant boulders form and how did they grow to that size!?! Thinking of something of that weight and size falling from an altitude of higher than 10,000 feet seems like there would be large, crater like indentations in the ground and would demolish anything and everything in its path on the way down.

IKR? I was thinking that hail might have collected on top of those shade cloths, behaving like a hammock, then melted together into large clumps that eventually fell thru and onto the ground. Certainly something made of ice that large should have left some type of crater before disintegrating on impact...
