5.6 Earthquake Hits Southeast Turkey

A 5.6 earthquake shook southeast Turkey on Monday, February 27, causing some buildings to collapse, Turkish authorities said. It was the latest major tremor to hit southern Turkey as the region rebuilds from earlier massive quakes across southern Turkey and northwest Syria.

The quake was felt in Malatya and surrounding provinces, including Kahramanmaraş and Gaziantep. Local authorities said people living in temporary camps after being displaced by the earlier quakes also felt it.

Local officials said search and rescue teams were deployed to five buildings. The United Nations has said at least 1.5 million people have been made homeless in southern Turkey, with more than 500,000 homes needing to be rebuilt.

After the latest tremor, local government officials told people not to enter or stand near damaged buildings in the earthquake zone. Nearly 10,000 aftershocks have been reported since February 6.
