World War II-Era Military Aircraft Crashes on Take Off in Texas

In central Texas, a World War II-era military aircraft carrying 13 passengers crashed and caught fire shortly after takeoff. The incident involved a vintage Douglas C-47 named "Bluebonnet Belle," which was en route to an air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Fortunately, all passengers on board the cargo plane survived the crash and were able to exit the aircraft, although there were several minor injuries. One person required airlift by helicopter to a medical center. The plane's dramatic crash was captured on video, showing it dipping dangerously to the left just after takeoff, striking the ground, and bursting into flames.

Chris Dowell, a staff member in the Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, which owns the aircraft, described the incident as a "total loss" for the plane. While some passengers were volunteers with the Commemorative Air Force, others were guests and family members.

The C-47 is a military cargo plane that played a vital role in transporting service members during World War II. The loss of the aircraft is considered tragic for the volunteers who dedicated their time to maintaining and operating it.

Despite the accident, the squadron remains committed to its mission of educating young people about WWII history, with an air show scheduled for September. The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation into the incident.
