Two Yak 52 Planes Collide During Airshow Leaving One Dead, One Wounded
Portugal. Two aircraft from the Yakstars aerobatics team collided in mid-flight this Sunday, at the Beja Air Show air festival. There is one death and one injured to be reported. One of the aircraft crashed mid-flight and another managed to remain in the air and land safely. The accident occurred at around 4:05 pm, during an aerial aerobatics demonstration, the Portuguese Air Force announced. There are 21 operational and at least 11 vehicles on site, according to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority. Due to the collision of aerobatic planes, the event, which was part of the Air Force's 72nd anniversary celebrations, was cancelled. Images shared on social media show the moment when one of the aircraft passes in front of a formation of six planes, touching each other in mid-flight. At that moment, one of the aircraft begins its downward trajectory, until it crashes and causes a strong explosion, while another hits the ground horizontally. The two planes involved in the accident belong to the Yakstars aerobatics group, made up of Portuguese and Spanish pilots. The group flies Warbird Yak52s aircraft, developed by the Soviet Union. The group is one of the largest civil aviation aerobatic display teams. The Beja Air Show air festival was scheduled to take place on the 1st and 2nd of June, at Air Base No. 11, between 10:30 and 17:00. Thousands of people were present at the site.
