Two Firefighters Dead After Firetruck Collides With a Jet in Peru
On November 18, 2022, a serious accident involving a LATAM Chile Airbus A320-200N, registration CC-BHB, occurred during its flight from Lima to Juliaca, Peru. The aircraft was accelerating for takeoff on Lima's runway 16 when it collided with a rescue and firefighting service (RFFS) vehicle, designated Rescue Vehicle R3, which unexpectedly crossed the runway. The collision was severe enough to detach the right-hand engine of the A320 from its mounting, leading to the collapse of the right main landing gear. This caused the aircraft to veer towards the right and come to a stop partially off the runway, about 8300 feet down. A fire erupted around the right-hand engine, engulfing both the aircraft and the rescue vehicle. Tragically, two firefighters in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene, and a third succumbed to injuries later. On the aircraft, 4 passengers sustained serious injuries, and 36 others suffered minor injuries. The Peruvian Aviation Accident Investigation Commission concluded that the incident was caused by a lack of coordinated planning, poor communication, and non-use of standardized phraseology. Specifically, the rescue vehicle entered the active runway without explicit authorization from the tower during a training exercise, leading to the catastrophic collision. |

Crossing a runway is like crossing a street. Even if you have been cleared to cross, you look both ways to confirm there is nothing coming.

Re: Two Firefighters Dead After Firetruck Collides With a Jet in Peru
"A Latam Peru plane, which covered the Lima-Juliaca route, suffered a severe collision before takeoff with a truck from the Fire and Rescue Service that was traveling on the runway, an event that left two people dead who were doing the aeronautical fire brigade."
