After further looking at the pics, I am virtually certain they went straight in. Look at the alignment of the cockpit struts, they are pulled straight forward. Look at the top wing in one of the pics, and the wings are bent forward from the center. This would indicate they hit on the nose of the aircraft.

That looks a lot more like a plane than the ultralights I've seen... and it didn't ball up like most aircraft do on impact- plane or ultralight

I think this might have been a stall/spin accident, with the aircraft too low to recover, and going straight into the ground. Ultralights are pretty lightly built, and they don't go that fast, I've seen a lot of ultralight accidents, and mostly the people get up and walk away. Wonder if anyone has video that they filmed, because "Hey, look, it's a biplane flying around!"

From what i read, even with a dead engine, they can still glide it down to safety with a little effort.

well, you have to admit that the brazilian rate of death are maybe 2 or 3 times than the other countries. specially on terms of violent methods.
