Two Dead After Ultralight Plane Crashes in Brazil
An ultralight plane crashed in the city of Ceará-Mirim, Brazil, yesterday afternoon killing 2 people. The aircraft flew over a field near BR 406, in the municipality's entry vicinity. Several teams from the Fire Department, Military Police and MECS were directed to the crash site. It is unclear what would have caused the crash of the aircraft. Two people were on the aircraft, a 38 year-old pilot and flight instructor, and the 52 year-old owner of the plane. There is no record also that other people have been injured. |

Re: Two Dead After Ultralight Plane Crashes in Brazil
It looks like an ultralight when it's smashed flat but it's an aerobatic biplane. The pic below is very similar, the elevator shape is a little different but you get the idea. I don't recognise that shape and can't find anything popular exactly resembling it so it's likely to be a kit plane - the owner was flying with a flight instructor who was controlling the plane at the time of the crash so a reasonable hypothesis is it's a maiden flight to take it up and test it out, and the new boy's toy he made in the garage was missing a vital screw someplace. |

Re: Two Dead After Ultralight Plane Crashes in Brazil
I am surprised they both died. Usually, ultralites are such gentle fliers that you only get bruises or maybe a broken bone. The aircraft is intact, which tells me that nothing important came off. I think this might have been a stall/spin accident, with the aircraft too low to recover, and going straight into the ground. Ultralights are pretty lightly built, and they don't go that fast, I've seen a lot of ultralight accidents, and mostly the people get up and walk away. Wonder if anyone has video that they filmed, because "Hey, look, it's a biplane flying around!"
