Twin Otter Plane Carrying 22 People Missing in Nepal Mountains
On May 29, 2022, a Tara Air plane, a Twin Otter aircraft with the tail number 9N-AET, went missing in Nepal with 22 people onboard, including 19 passengers and three crew members. The aircraft was on a 15-minute scheduled flight from the tourist town of Pokhara to the mountain town of Jomsom, a popular route among foreign hikers and pilgrims visiting the Muktinath temple. It lost contact with the airport tower shortly after take-off at around 9:55 am. The passengers on board included 13 Nepalis, four Indians, two Germans, and three crew members. Despite efforts to locate the aircraft, bad weather and thick cloud cover in the Pokhara-Jomsom area hampered the search operations. Helicopters were dispatched for the search, but poor visibility and the challenging terrain made the process difficult. The following day, rescue workers recovered 20 bodies from the crash site, although the search for the remaining two people continued. |
