Re: Student Pilot Crashes During First Solo Flight After Failed Go-Around
The pilot, pictured, was 17 years old and had 34 hours flight experience at the time of the accident. He suffered minor injuries and evacuated himself from the aircraft. In my opinion, having flown 172s, the student pilot was not competent to fly solo. It is basic airmanship to maintain an appropriate indicated airspeed at all times, including when climbing out after a go-around. That aircraft should have been trimmed to around 70 KIAS for climb. Instead the pilot allowed the nose to come up, losing airspeed, and entering a stall. Looking at the NTSB docket, it appears the pilot first flew solo a few months before the accident. I wonder if he hadn't done much flying between then and the accident? (The instructor "checked him out" to fly solo, which I would not have expected if the student pilot had been flying regularly since his first solo).
